Top 3 Organizational Must-Haves for your Kitchen Remodel

When considering your kitchen remodel design, the first thing that we address is function. Sure, we want the kitchen to look fantastic, and of course we will make that happen, but it has to function first and foremost! Here are three things that in my opinion, are must-haves for your new kitchen remodel.

  1. Mix of Open and Closed Storage

When we talk about open storage, we mean cabinets with glass doors or open shelves. Closed storage are your standard solid cabinet doors. You want a mix of both for a few reasons, first of all - you’ll want to have closed storage for function, to hold and disguise all of your things that aren’t necessarily the prettiest to look at. But you’ll also want some open storage. This helps break up the space visually, add a detail and some visual interest, and allows you to display things that are either beautiful or used daily (for example, a nice set of dishes, or large servingware).

2. Pull-out Trash Can

The best part of a pull-out trash can is you don’t see it. Who wants to see where all the trash is anyways? Most pull-out trash can cabinets now have plenty of space for two cans so you can incorporate trash and recycling. This is so nice in any kitchen and helps keep the space looking clean and fresh.

3. Built-In Microwave

When designing a new kitchen, don’t forget to consider the microwave. I typically build these into a base cabinet, but I’ve also incorporated them into wall cabinets and pantry cabinets as well. I’m not a fan of over-the-range microwaves, as I think they look too heavy. But a built-in microwave frees up valuable counterspace and really modernizes a kitchen.

So there you have it - a mix of open and closed storage, a pull-out trash can and a built-in microwave are what I consider three must-have pieces in a kitchen remodel.
